Meeting Announcement & Appeal for Journal Articles

Wow! This summer is sure flying by fast. June and July programs were presented on DNA and Immigration, and coming up on the 25th of this month we will have our own Scotland Ambassador flying in to join us for a special Saturday "pot-luck" dinner and meeting. Carol Dew is currently living in Scotland and is a Little River County native. She is one of our most enthusiatic researchers and we are excited to have her attend. Carol's father will also be in attendance and will be talking about growing up in Winthrop Arkansas.
Everyone please make plans to join us. The meeting is August 25, 12 noon at Cossatot University in Ashdown. Guests are welcome, so feel free to stop in and meet everyone.

The end of the year is fast approaching. I have begun the fall journal and am sending an appeal to all Little River County researchers for articles to be included in this issue. Family stories, histories, photographs, etc., are all welcome and appreciated. The spotlight for this issue will be Pine Prairie, so if any of you have information about this historical community, please send it to me before the November 1st deadline.

The LRCGS web site is going to be under construction for the next few weeks as I update files and add new ones. If you happen to get an error message or "page not found", don't be alarmed. I should be finished within a week or two, and I promise to work as quickly as possible. On that note, those of you who have visited our site and have benefited from any of the information there, or didn't find what you were looking for....SEND US AN E!! Our mission is to provide free resource material on our county and surrounding areas and we would love to know what you think of our site. If you have a lookup request, there are several members who do this free of charge, except for copies, so send in your requests. If we can't help, we can at least point you in the right direction.

Happy Hunting!

Terri

Update and New Additions to LRCGS Web Site

April and May have been busy months for LRCGS. We had booths at the Little River County Courthouse Centennial Celebration, Ashdown School's Annual Spring Fling and Ashdown's Annual Whistlestop Fair. All three were exciting events and we talked to many folks from all over who were interested in beginning their own family research.

We have had some great speakers at our monthly meetings so far this year.

Our speaker in January was Mr Leon Hood from the Soil Conservation Office in Ashdown. He presented a very educational program on topographical maps and explained how to read them. This is very useful to those of us who would like to find these old cemeteries and plot out the land where our ancestors lived.

In February Mr Eddie Lamb provided us with an entertaining look at his native home land- Scotland.

In March we presented a workshop on cemetery history, symbolism and burial customs.

If you live in the area, our monthly meetings are the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings are held at the Cossatot U of A, with refreshments starting at 5:30. Visitors are welcome!

New additions to the LRCGS web site:
Little River County Church History
Clinical License Book~1885-1893- Calls to Ordination
Rocky Comfort Methodist Church History
Ashdown Presbyterian Church History

Little River County Military
1930 Veteran's Census ~Little River County

A special note~ If you happen to know the location of any cemetery that is not listed on our cemetery page, would you please drop us a line? We are searching for old family plots, and the smaller "lost" cemeteries in this county. You can reach us at grady@whti.net or jenkum@newwavecomm.net.

LRCGS Member Announces New Family Web Site

LRCGS member Carol Dew invites everyone to come and take a look at her new family website entitled "Who was Elizabeth R. Barnett?" It details her long search for the ancestors of Elizabeth and the migration of the descendants of Moore Barnett from Alabama to the Clear Creek area of Sevier County, Arkansas, by the early 1840s. Families discussed in the site include the Skidmores, McMillans, and Smoots, as well as Robert & Lucinda Millwee Barnett. Check it out HERE.

New Cemeteries Added to Web Site

Over the last few months, our cemetery committee has added ten new cemeteries, bringing our total surveys to over 50, with a few Sevier County cemeteries added in the mix.
New surveys include: Campbell Family, Wright Cemetery, Doughten Family, Holy Cross Cemetery, New Home Cemetery, Piney Grove Cemetery, Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Hopson Cemetery, Cerro Gordo Cemetery and Cooper Cemetery.
